Is Valorant Free to Play? (PC, Xbox, PS5, PS4)

The Short Answer: Yes, But It Depends

When I first discovered Valorant, I was skeptical about its “free-to-play” claim. After all, most competitive shooters eventually hit you with some kind of paywall. But after playing since beta, I can confirm: Valorant is completely free to play on PC with no mandatory purchases required to access any gameplay content.

However, there’s an important catch for console players that I’ll explain in detail below.

Valorant’s Availability by Platform

Valorant

Here’s the current status of Valorant across different platforms:

PlatformFree to Play?Currently Available?Expected Release
PCYesYesAlready released
Xbox Series X/SYesNoJuly 2025
PS5YesNoJuly 2025
PS4NoNoNot planned
Xbox OneNoNoNot planned
MobileYesNoUnder development

PC Version: Truly Free to Play

On PC, Valorant follows a genuinely free-to-play model:

  • Free download from the official Riot Games website
  • All agents can be unlocked through gameplay (no paywall)
  • All maps are available to everyone
  • No competitive advantage from spending money
  • No battle pass requirement to play ranked mode

The only things that require real money are cosmetic items like:

  • Weapon skins
  • Player cards
  • Gun buddies (charms)
  • Sprays
  • Agent skins

I’ve been playing for years without spending a penny, and I can access all the same gameplay content as someone who’s spent hundreds of dollars.

Console Version: Coming Soon

Valorant Image

After years of PC exclusivity, Riot Games officially announced Valorant is coming to consoles in 2025. Here’s what I know about the console release:

  • Release date: July 2025 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S
  • Free-to-play model: Will follow the same free model as PC
  • Cross-play: Will offer cross-play with PC (with options to opt out)
  • Account linking: Will use Riot accounts to maintain progress across platforms

However, there’s a key limitation:

  • No last-gen support: PS4 and Xbox One will not be getting Valorant

According to Riot, this decision was made to ensure consistent performance across all platforms. The game’s precise gunplay and 128-tick servers demand hardware capabilities that last-gen consoles simply can’t provide.

How the Free-to-Play Model Works

Valorant’s monetization is strictly cosmetic-based:

Free Content

  • All gameplay modes (Unrated, Competitive, Spike Rush, etc.)
  • All maps
  • All agents (unlockable through gameplay)
  • Basic weapon skins

Paid Content

  • Premium weapon skins (typically 1775-2175 VP, or about $18-22)
  • Battle Pass (1000 VP, about $10 per act)
  • Agent skins
  • Premium gun buddies, cards, and sprays

Currency System

  • Valorant Points (VP): Purchased with real money
  • Radianite Points: Used to upgrade premium skins, earned through Battle Pass or purchased with VP
  • Kingdom Credits: Earned through gameplay, used to unlock agents and some basic items

My Experience with Valorant’s Free Model

I’ve played Valorant since beta launch, and I’ve unlocked all agents without spending money by:

  1. Completing daily and weekly missions
  2. Activating agent contracts
  3. Playing consistently to level up
  4. Focusing on the free rewards in the battle pass

The free experience is genuinely complete. I never felt pressured to spend, though the cosmetics are certainly tempting!

Console Launch: What to Expect

From what I’ve gathered from Riot’s announcements, the console version will:

  • Launch with all currently available agents and maps
  • Include the same game modes as PC
  • Feature console-specific UI adjustments
  • Offer aim assist (likely to be controversial)
  • Maintain the same free-to-play model

Is It Worth Waiting for Console Release?

If you have a PC that meets the minimum requirements, I wouldn’t recommend waiting for the console release in 2025. The PC version is well-optimized, stable, and has a massive established player base.

However, if you’re exclusively a console player with a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, the upcoming release is definitely something to look forward to.
